CINDY CHURCH

High Country Soul

Cindy's Website

Originally from Bible Hill, Nova Scotia, CINDY CHURCH's earliest musical influences were formed through singing with family and friends at many Maritime gatherings. She is firmly grounded in country and traditional music, but her sound also reflects her interest in jazz, blues, gospel and swing.

Since her arrival in southern Alberta, CINDY CHURCH has made a strong impact as a vocalist, songwriter and recording artist, both locally and nationally on both the Country and Folk Music scenes.

In 1984, she teamed up with guitarist Nathan Tinkham and, within a year, both were members of IAN TYSON'S band, THE CHINOOK ARCH RIDERS. Cindy has sung background vocals on three of Ian's contemporary cowboy albums, and continues to perform with him occasionally.

In 1987, Cindy, along with Nathan, became two-thirds of the GREAT WESTERN ORCHESTRA, a trio that received much national acclaim with their 1989 self-titled album. As the featured vocalist, Cindy gained much attention on Country radio and CBC radio with such songs as, "TRAIN OF LIFE", "RIDE ON", & "VAGABOND".

During the last few years she has been a regular guest on CBC Radio' s MORNINGSIDE, and has appeared on GABOREAU, as well as various regional programs. She has also been a guest on CBC TV's national musical variety series, "RITA AND FRIENDS", and "UP ON THE ROOF".

Currently, Cindy is pursuing a solo career as well as her work with QUARTETTE, and has just released her third album, "CINDY CHURCH" for the Stony Plain label.

In 1993, she was awarded FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR at the Alberta Country Music Awards. She was nominated for the VISTA RISING STAR award at the 1994 Canadian Country Music Awards, and in 1995 received nominations from both the CCMA and the JUNO Awards as BEST FEMALE COUNTRY ARTIST OF THE YEAR.  Cindy has again been nominated for Best Female Country Vocalist at the Canadian Country Music Awards in September, 1997

Quotes About Cindy Church

"....there's no mistaking the Alberta-based folk/country singer's precise, bell-like voice. Once you hear it, you will know immediately who it is."
- BILLBOARD MAGAZINE

"Cindy Church has that special magic to be able to attract an ear with her clear, plaintive, high country vocal delivery. It' s a spellbinding experience to listen to her create vocal imagery with her singing.
- LARRY DELANEY, COUNTRY MUSIC NEWS

"Cindy Church, Nathan Tinkham and I have been singing and playing together off and on for ten years. In that time, I've watched Cindy develop into just about the best song stylist around, while Nathan's guitar-playing is original and decisive.
